The Military and Weather; strategic and operational planning

Recent news such as the Ukraine war, Taiwan strait tension and even just by looking at our daily GPS running watches’s accuracy that would get severely affected by heavy cloud coverage, we can derived that many military operation would be also affected by different weather phenomena. Satelites won’t be able to take photos if there are heavy cloud coverage, guided system could be affected as well. That is one reason why military has their own meteorologist.

Land operations are 100% reliant on vehicles for transporting materials and soldiers, in many historical cases and even recent cases with Russia’s Ukraine invasion showed that being able to forecast weather and the environment would plan an significant role in war.  For example, temperature was lower than expected, and ground was not frozen as expected which leads to Russian tanks to be stuck in mud and became sitting targets.

With better forecasting tools incorporated into planning strategy and operation, one can estimate the obstacles for different type of movement, ground condition, by using different vehicle types(tracks, wheels) and weight effects on such vehicle type, then in turns, one can derive an estimated movement time, for a planning exercise to reveal any potential danger for an operation.

Such as if a platoon of ground troop with supporting vehicles such as tanks, have to move past a choke point, there is already fundamental danger, so would different weather conditions on the ground affects causes different risks, and require longer time to be held/passes through a choke point which could increase potential danger?

There are 2 scenario which we had seen in the past 2 years, 1 is the Taiwan Strait’s and south china sea choke point, would the high sea/waves and different conditions to increase difficulties for China if they wish to send troops to Taiwan, as sea conditions are rougher in winter and summer has high risk of hurricane and storms, that’s why it is quite easy to estimate a time winter for potential risk for invasion.

And in Ukraine the warming temperature caused many Russian tanks to be stuck in the mud and with poor strategy, causes them to become vulnerable. Using advanced modeling tools like Climatility, there can be options to model different risk and requirements for different weather conditions, providing forces with more operational optionality.
